Dr. Ernesto Cofiño Declared Venerable

On December 14, 2023, the Holy Father Francis authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to promulgate the decrees for eleven causes of canonization. Among these is the decree on the heroic virtues of Ernesto Cofiño (1899-1991), a Guatemalan father of five children and a pediatrician – a profession he placed especially at the service of children from the neediest families. For several years he was in charge of Caritas Guatemala. He joined Opus Dei as a supernumerary member in 1956.

Since discovering his vocation to Opus Dei, he intensified his relationship with God through daily Mass and communion, frequent confession, prayer, sacrifices in ordinary life and other practices of Christian life. He had a great devotion to our Lady. He devoted significant time to studying in order to improve his own religious formation. He was especially attracted to the idea of putting into practice the social doctrine of the Church. He actively assisted a number of organizations dedicated to the education and professional and human training of farmers, women, laborers with very limited resources, and to the formation of university youth. His diligent service for the good of others continued until he was 92 years old.

Ernesto Cofiño is the first supernumerary faithful of Opus Dei to be declared venerable.
