Madrid College of Chemists Proposes the Appointment of Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri as Its Patron Saint

“The Madrid College of Chemists has chosen Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri as its patroness because she is a blessed and because she is from Madrid, and therefore can represent us very well. Moreover, as Pope Francis said at her beatification, she is an example of sanctity in ordinary life, and can be like any of us.” With these words, Íñigo Pérez-Baroja, dean of this scientific body, presented the proposal for the appointment of Guadalupe as its new patron saint, who would join St. Albert the Great, until now the only patron saint of chemists in Madrid. The occasion was a ceremony at the site of the institution that took place on Thursday, May 9. Besides the dean, José Carlos Martín de la Hoz, diocesan postulator of the Guadalupe’s cause of canonization also spoke, highlighting her professionalism as a chemist and a teacher, along with her joy.

A few days later, on May 18, which is the liturgical feast of the Blessed, the College of Chemists convened a Holy Mass in memory of Guadalupe in the church where her mortal remains rest: the oratory of Caballero de Gracia, in Madrid.

To obtain the appointment of Guadalupe as patron saint, the College of Chemists and the Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Madrid have requested authorization from the Archbishopric of Madrid, the Office of the Causes of Saints and the Prelature of Opus Dei.

Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri (1916-1975), one of the first women in Opus Dei, was beatified in Madrid in 2019.
