The Barbastro City Council Commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Awarding of the City’s Gold Medal to the Founder of Opus Dei
On May 25, the Barbastro City Council commemorated the 50th anniversary of the awarding of the city’s gold medal to St. Josemaría Escrivá with a ceremony held in the plenary hall, the same place where the event took place half a century earlier. The ceremony was presided over by the current mayor, Fernando Torres, accompanied by four former mayors. In attendance were the regional vicar of Opus Dei in Spain, Ignacio Barrera, the territorial delegate of the Government of Aragon in Huesca, Javier Betorz, and other regional, provincial, county, and municipal authorities. Silvia Peropadre, diocesan Delegate for Celebrations, represented the bishopric.
Throughout the ceremony, which was conducted by journalist Lola García, several witnesses to the event on May 25, 1975 took the floor, including journalist Ángel Huguet and Conchita Cremades Sanz-Pastor, as well as several Barbastro residents of different ages and professions who, although they didn’t know St. Josemaría during his lifetime, spoke about him and the impact of his spirituality on their lives.
