Almendralejo (Spain): A Painting of St. Josemaría and Dr. Nevado in the Church of the Purification

On June 18, in the city of Almendralejo, the Archbishop of Merida-Badajoz, Most Rev. Celso Morga, blessed a painting of St. Josemaría with Dr. Manuel Nevado Rey. Concelebrating with the archbishop in the Church of the Purification were the pastor, Rafael Corraliza, who spoke about Dr. Nevado, of whom he has fond memories, and other priests, among them the Vicar of Opus Dei for Andalusia and Extremadura, Javier Yániz, who presented a relic of St. Josemaría for veneration in the parish.

The event was attended by Dr. Nevado’s children and relatives. The artist who painted it, Ricardo Kantowitz, a Brazilian of Polish descent who lives in Spain, also attended.

Manuel Nevado was a traumatologist who practiced his profession in Almendralejo. He suffered from incurable radiation dermatitis and turned to the intercession of the then Blessed Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer asking for his cure. This was the miracle that, once approved by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, opened the way to the canonization of the founder of Opus Dei in 2002. A few years later, Dr. Nevado died of another illness.
